OK, so I haven't updated the journal in a really long time.

You've been doing great, staying healthy and having lots of fun. We had a great time at the cottage this year except for the bugs. This is the first time that you really enjoyed being there and being the centre of attention (unlike any other day!)

Now that your language skills are really coming along your personality and sense of humour are really starting to shine!
Some of your favourite sayings lately are:
    'I eat ALLLL the macanoni'
'I love it, love it, love it!'
    'Plea-plea-plea-plea-please!'
'Oh no, a monster in the kitchen cooking dinner! Hide!'
'Hey everybody, whacha doing?' to anyone that will listen!

Your favourite books are still Grumpy Bird, Lost and Found, and you've recently added The Gruffalo to the mix.

You're still stuck at the same spot in terms of eating. We've been here for two years with very little progress. We have another appointment at the Feeding Clinic at Bloorview in September so hopefully they'll have some new insight on how to get you to chew.

You been using the potty now for most of the summer. You are having 'accidents' about every other day, but I can see an increase in your awareness. We were told to only send underpants to daycare now (no pullups!) and lots of extra clothes and there have been many days that you have been dry all day at school.

You recently had an LP (lumbar puncture to draw cerebral spinal fluid) done at Sick Kids as your new metabolics doctor is convinced that you DO NOT have NKH (non-ketotic hyperglycinemia) and we needed to do this test to make sure. If that is the case, we are back to square one in terms of a diagnosis. I get the feeling though, that your metabolics doctor has something (another diagnosis) in mind, but he wants to rule out the NKH before we move on. I was never sold on the NKH diagnosis from the beginning...you just didn't fit the picture. I've been doing some research and have a couple of ideas, so we'll see if the doctor and I are thinking along the same lines.

You are getting to be such a big boy and I'm so proud of you! When we go to the playground now, I can sit back and watch you from a distance...you don't need any help nor do you look back as you run off to your favourite slide. I look back to what you were doing a year ago and I'm so amazed at your strength and motivation. You will work at a skill, like climbing a ladder at the park, over and over again, week after week, until you master it and then you move on to the next exciting thing! You are so determined and I'm in awe of you.

And to think the doctors told us when you were 14 days old that you would not live to see 16 days....

Grammie:  Oh you guys. This is just so amazing. Everyday brings new developments and more fun. My favourite Finlay-ism this summer was "play, lotsa fun'!That was when he was explaining to me why we SHOULD go down to the dock to play though I was trying to direct him to the road to play ball...since he threw all his toys in the water off the dock. The play, losta fun was seeing Gramma scramble to get them back! Well it was fun and I finally hit on the idea of putting a big pile of small rocks on the dock for you to throw in. That was the real ticket and we loved it. Can't wait to see what next year brings!
    Love Grammie
Auni:  You guys all never cease to amaze me. Thanks for the update. xo a.
Christina:  big fat aligator tears are falling... but, b/c of happiness. thanks for that d...

So glad to hear that you are doing well...we miss you and think about you every day! Hope to see you all soon! Love to all of you xoxo

Well, it's November and you are now 31 months old. Let's see what's new...

    - you are saying lots of new words and word combos. I think your current favourite saying is 'bye stinky poo!' You are now saying Moby's name clearly and correctly. For the longest time you called him Ma-nia. And you are now saying 'Clifford' instead of 'Cli-wa'.

-you can go up and down the stairs like nothing. Yesterday you fell down the stairs at school and landed on your head. You got a scrap above your eyebrow, but that was the extent of injury and it has NOT discouraged you one bit from climbing up again.

-you are still struggling with fine motor skills and get easily frustrated when you can't do something. We are working on your pinscer grasp and doing puzzles. At this point you have no interest in colouring or drawing. All you want to do is practice all the new gross motor stuff that you are now able to do.

-you are riding Snowman every Saturday morning and it turns out that you only cry when mama is there. When dada takes you, you are perfectly happy! I think dada is going to have to take you each week!

-you have a new nickname 'Houdini' because you are the escape artist at school. you have been found in other classrooms, in the staff lounge, and down on the first floor kitchen. To get to the kitchen, you went through 2 doors and 2 gates.

-you are going to your first birthday party for one of your school mates. It's Maya's 3rd birthday and she's holding her party at a place called Kidsworks. They have an indoor playground and sand pit, so you should have lots of fun.

Now I just need to take some new photos and post them....soon!

Well, it's been a while since I've updated your Journal. Let's see what's new...

You are doing lots of walking, attempting to run and can do the stairs really easily, a little too easy now. You can make it all the way up before I even notice now, which is scary for me!You can get into standing all by yourself, with no support.

You love going to daycare and look forward to seeing your teachers, Tammy, Nicole and Rochelle. You are old enough to move to the Preschool Room (from the Toddler Room) and start your transition week today. Your new teacher is Connie. Hopefully there will be some old friends from your Toddler room there.

You got a new pair of AFOs. They are really soft and give very minimal support, but just enough so you are not turning over on your ankles. You seem to be adjusting to them easily but you are still walking on your heels when you wear them.

You love going to the park and walking around on the grass and sand and have lots of fun going up and down the hills. You like going on the slide and can climb up the stairs all by yourself.

You are talking up a storm! You can easily do two word combos, are doing lots of 3 word combos and have started some 4 word combos! You are making jokes too! Today I asked you to say 'I love Dada' and you said 'I love coffee!' and started to laugh!

You love to watch Clifford the Big Red Dog and one of the books is your absolute favourite and you request it every night before bed. It's the only time of day that you will sit still for 20 minutes...to watch Clifford.

    That's it for now!

Grammie:  Wow Mr Finlay I can't believe how fast you are growing up. Imagine moving to the PRESCHOOL room!! And I love the jokes. Great thing to have a sense of humour from day one. Love you all...Grammie Janet

    HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY FINLAY!

I can't believe you are 2 years old...the time has gone by so quickly and so much has happened over the last 24 months.

You have amazed me with your strength, courage, determination and spirit.

You make everyone you meet smile with your dancing, growling or charm! The nurses at MacKids all loved you and didn't want you to go. (I'll write about the hospital 'visit' some other time)

I am so proud of you and everything that you have done. I love you more and more each day.

    Love,
    Mama

    WE BOUGHT A HOUSE!

It's official, we are home owners! Check out the photos. Here are the details:

184 Strachan Ave, at Queen St
It has 3 apartments: first floor 2 bed apt, basement 2 bed apt, and we will be living on 2nd and 3rd floors. Our 'unit' has 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, a huge living area (27' x 18') a big kitchen with french doors out to a balcony that overlooks and has access to the back yard.
I am most excited over the fact that it has Central Air AND a dishwasher, the two things that I have been longing for. Our unit needs lots of cosmetic finishing work, but all the mechanical items like electric and plumbing were renovated 5 years ago. We are hoping to put in new floors throughout our unit, a new kitchen and finish off all the bathrooms. We take possession of the house April 2nd and we will do the work that needs to be done during the month of April and then move in the first of May.

    Comments:
Mom and Dad:  Good bye Travelodge , hello 184 Strachan (He He). We are so happy for you and Mac. Now Finlay has LOTS of room to walk around in.3 bathrooms Davina and central air to boot, Life is Good.

    Ring Bearer!

We are very excited as Dan and Ashley have asked Finlay to be the Ring Bearer at their wedding this summer. Ash has been working with Finlay for 17 months now and Dan started in January. We are very honoured to be able to share in their special day.

    SCARY!!!!

Finlay and I were on our way to horse therapy this morning. We were driving on the DVP in the middle lane when a HUGE piece of ice blew off a transport heading in the opposite direction and crashed into our windshield! The scariest part was the sound - it sounded like we'd been hit by a bomb! And glass shards flew everywhere. Needless to say we had to pull over so that I could regain my composure and get off the DVP. I took my time driving home and am still shaking! It hit more on the passenger side so most of the glass was over there. The sound really scared Finlay and he was upset for quite a while afterwards. Whew, we are lucky, it could have been so much worse!

    GI Appointment

Finlay saw his GI doctor this week. He has grown 4 cm since September but has put on hardly any weight, really just a few grams. But his doctor was happy that he is still growing and Finlay is so much more active now with his walker he's burning lots more calories. We are switching his nutritional supplement from Resource to Nutren, which is supposed to be easier to digest. We have also started two new meds - Domperidone for motility and Ranitidine for reflux. We are hoping that these changes will help Finlay digest his food quicker and not stay in his stomach causing reflux.

Finlay has started a new and very annoying behaviour of not swallowing what is in his mouth. He will hold the food in his mouth for like 2 minutes (not exagerating) before swallowing. Not sure why he started doing this but it's hard not to get frustrated when it takes an hour to feed him one meal. We are pretty sure it's behavioural and not something medically going on, so we just have to figure out a way to get him to swallow!
